An introduction to the funStep Interest Group

The international project funStep, funded by the European Commission (ESPRIT # 22056) and a set of furniture manufacturers, develops the standards for the information exchange between manufacturers and clients in the furniture industry being based on the standard ISO 10303.

The project was initiated by industrial representatives of the furniture sector in Spain and Germany mainly, looking for a solution to solve the incompatibility of the computer applications and to support 3D data exchange, following ISO-STEP standards. Similar projects have been carried out in other sectors as automotive, aircraft, building and construction, or shipbuilding.

The funStep standard deals with the product data exchange between manufacturer and retailer in home and kitchen furniture sub-sectors. High collaboration has been obtained from both manufacturers and retailers in the requirements specification.

Based on the great amount of contacts received about the project, it has been organised a so called "funStep Interest Group", in order to go envisaging the requirements of the maximum number of users, to extend the international impact, and to widen the area of the standard to other areas as is the furniture Production.

The list of joining organisations is also available at this web site. Please contact funStep@aidima.es to get up-to-dated information.

The main objectives of the funStep Interest Group are the following:

The participation in the Interest Group has two possible profiles:

  1.  As Member. Each Member is committed to attend the Chapter meetings, to analyse the information received, and to provide their own needs concerning information exchange with their clients and suppliers. Electronic mail will be widely used within the funStep-IG, and each member is encouraged to have e-mail available.
  1.  As Chapter Co-ordinator. It will be organised a Chapter for each group of countries with the same official language, in order to easy manage with the discussions and the information diffusion to the industrial environment. The Co-ordinator has the duty of organising the activities in their Chapter (meetings, documentation issue, translations) to disseminate the information (mailings and e-mail), to collect requirements of the sector, and to introduce such requirements to the technical discussions at the international project level. The Co-ordinator has the duty of attending to the international meetings and take part in the Management Board at international level.
